  1. This chapter is interesting to me because it has shed light to the contribution that cadavers have made to the military and law enforcement. Because cadavers have been use to test bullet prove vest. A human did not have to try it and have the risk of the vest not working and being shot.Cadavers have also saved life by testing nonlethal bullet which in some case have been prove lethal. This is connected to biology because the skin is a organ and the bullet prove vest is made so that bullets don't penetrate it.The vest was designed to protect your chest, cadaver are used because they can test the limits of what a human body can handle.Which in biology we will learn more about human organs and there limits.

    1. I strongly agree with what you wrote about how human cadavers can be tested on to see if a bullet can be lethal or not. But may I add that this was not the case of U.S and European research; they shot bullets on pigs because their organs are a lot like human organs. The heart of a pig is a close match to our hearts; goats were also shot at because their lungs are like ours.

    2. I agree with what you are saying about the contributions of cadavers to law enforcement and the military. They are the reason any vest, bullet, or gun works so well on the enemy. They are the reason we take less bullets with bullet proof vests, or our bullets are good enough to penetrate other vests.

    3. I agree that cadavers were the reason that bullet proof vests exists today. Also I agree that it is better to use a cadaver instead of a live person.

    4. I agree with you. Cadavers have saved many people from death. They made sure that bulletproof vests work, and proved that nonlethal bullets are actually sometimes lethal.

    5. I agree, cadavers have played a very important role in the armed forces. They have saved many lives by testing lethal/nonlethal bullets and bulletproof vests. If we used a dummy, we wouldn't see what can actually happen in reality.

    6. I agree that cadavers have saved alot of living human beings from death. Cadavers are really useful in the army and military.

    7. I agree that it is much better to use cadavers than live humans, but I have also seen a special clay that goes behind the vest and dents it when a bullet hits the vest.

    8. The idea of Cadavers being used to test bullets and bulletproof vest was a very important role played in the military field. Rather than using it on humans, If that were the case - we would either have killed people in the process or probably not even been able to endure it.

    9. I had no idea that they used cadavers for bullet testing before this chapter, and it interests me that they would. Usually, it is not the most accurate way considering impact pressure (well, how hard it would hurt against your body- like a Bullet proof vest could still protect you but plow you hard like a punch) though it was still a clever idea to use the cadavers to test out such dangerous experiments.

    10. I also agree that cadavers helped keep the living safe, by testing all these bullets and bombs for us. Instead of having a normal healthy person test it or an animal, we can bypass the harm and use a cadaver instead.

    11. I had absolutely no idea that cadavers were used to test bulletproof vests, so this chapter was astonishing to read.

  2. I couldn't put my book down while reading this chapter because of how the author relayed what she learned in incredible detail, it really drew me in. Cadavers have brought the armed forces to where they are because of all the testing they have contributed to; the bullet proof vest, "nonlethal" bullets, etc. They have in many ways saved soldiers and policemen with the testing they have participated, without even knowing it. In anatomy we will learn about the way the body reacts to impacts such as gun shots and how it is affected.

    1. I completely agree with you, human cadavers have really become important in the armed forces. They play a very important role in testing things out for the army so that they don't have to use an actual person. These cadavers have a very import part in the safety of police officers and the army everywhere.

    2. It really is amazing what cadavers have done to help save lives by testing out new equipment making sure that it is safe for humans to use. They are heroes even thought they are dead.

    3. I agree with the part where you said that the use of cadavers to test bullets, among other things for the military, is very important for developing new military hardware. They aren't just helping the military, but also police officers, federal agencies, etc.

    4. I agree with you that cadavers are the true heroes behind bullet proof vests development.

    5. I agree that cadavers play a big role in the armed forces. I also agree that they have saved many lives. It's better that they use dead bodies instead because we can see the real damange.

    6. I completely agree with you on this. This chapter was described in great detail and I absolutely loved it. I agree with you in saying that cadavers have saved numerous soldiers and police officers because without bullet proof vests many of our soldiers and police officers would have been killed.

    7. I agree with you cadavers help improve law enforcement today and without them many our police officers would have been dead. It's better that the bodies helped the evolution of bullet proof vest.

    8. I agree that cadavers have saved many lives, without them a lot of our law enforcement and military soldiers would be dead. Also i think they might yield better results than ballistic gelatin, but i guess we wont be able to see how big the cavity originally was.

  3. This chapter is very interesting because it shows how cadavers are used to help in the evolution of guns and their ammunition. The Army uses cadavers to test new guns and ammunition to see if they are correspondent to their design specifications. It is very smart of the Army to use cadavers because they are cheaper than ballistic gelatin and they can give better results. I think it is very good to use dead body's to do gun tests because no one gets hurt, but you still get the results. This relates to Biology because it shows how a cadaver can be used to help in the evolution of things like guns, ammunition and bullet proof vests, etc.

    1. This chapter was interesting. Without human cadavers we wouldn't be able to know how to make bullet proof vests and without bullet proof vests half of our army people are gone. I agree with you by using human cadavers you will get the same affect as if they were alive. But finding the affect will be quite difficult at times because their organs are not working unlike when they were still breathing.

    2. I completely agree with both of you. I love what Diannemay said about bullet proof vests. It is very true that bullet proof vests are important in battle and cadavers have been a huge help.

  4. Vinicius ballistic gelatin is not really costly it is just a human tissue stimulant made by the Kind & Knox gelatin company. I believe you we're referring to the Frangible Surrogate Leg (FSL) which cost around $5,000 dollars were as a cadaver cost under $500. Other than that I totally agree with what you are saying.

  5. This chapter in Stiff really peaked my interest. It's incredible how cadavers play an important role in the armed forces. They have saved many lives by testing bullet proof vests, bullets lethal and nonlethal, etc. If a dummy was used to test this, we wouldn't be able to actually see the real damage it can actually cause. But with a real body we can see what actually happens, because it is a real cadaver. Bones and all. This has to do with biology because we will learn (i believe) about how much a human body can take a blow, how it will react, and testing the body.

    1. I agree. I think it is incredible how a cadaver can save so many lives merely by being shot at and tested on. I couldn't believe when I read that cadavers were used in this area, I was shocked.

    2. I also agree. For the lives that have been lost, and the cadavers that were used I find it incredible that cadavers saved many lives. If the dummy was used rather than a cadaver, different results could have occurred. I found this chapter very interesting.

  6. I found this chapter interesting to me. I like the fact that they used human cadavers and other species organs to test bullets on instead of an actual living person. This pertains to biology because we are able to see the impact on our organs and how we will be able to react to the impact. It also helps make better equipment in the near future if there is a war (which hopefully there wont be one). I really liked this chapter and I loved how Ms./Mrs. Mary Roach how she was able to give everything in detail. Personally, this is my favorite chapter of the book (especially when they were talking about guns). I liked the fact that no one got hurt from doing this instead they used a substitute.

    1. I agree with you that instead of killing real people, they use people that are already dead (but would that be considered killing someone even if they are dead?)

  7. This chapter of stiff is interesting because it explains how they test bullets from different types of calibers to nonlethal bullets. I personally found it very interesting how Mary Roach explains the reaction that human brains and animal brains react to when we get shot. A few biology concepts I believe we may learn is how our brain reacts to injury. My personal interpretation on this chapter is very descriptive and understandable. I am thankful for all these test they do to help policeman soldiers etc. from getting severely hurt. Its amazing how cadavers help our nation.

    1. Exactly why I found it interesting, as well. I also agree that it is very descriptive and helpful, Roach did a wonderful job at explaining everything to us readers. It really is amazing how cadavers help us!

    2. Cadavers have been a huge help on testing bulletproof vests. They have the same results as if they were still alive. Except the corpses wouldn’t feel any pain.

  8. This chapter really stood out from the rest. It never occurred to me that cadavers would be needed to test out military equipment, both offensively as well as defensively. Many variables need to be filled in order for bullets and other projectiles to be considered harmful, but they also need to be protected to prevent any casualties among our side. Biology concepts could include the damage output from the bullets, as well as important spots that would be critical to survival in the battlefield. This really shows how cadavers are used to both protect and harm at the same time.

    1. This chapter definitely was one of the ones that stood out from the book. I never knew that cadavers were the testers of military equipment. I thought they put it on like a test dummy that looks like a person, not a dead person! It's strange because then if the product doesn't work all the insides would probable go everywhere and that would just be disgusting.

    2. I agree with you never would have guessed that cadavers were used for military purposes. It makes sense to test your weaponry on the closes thing a living human being. That is a dead human being, good discussion.

  9. This chapter was interesting to me because i din't know the army used cadavers for weapon and armor research. I also found it strange that body armor manufacturers sometimes don't meet up to their standards which in a battle scenario can get you killed. I find it important for research to be made with Incapacitation which is stopping a target without killing or seriously injuring the target. Another thing that interested me was the use of ballistic gelatin witch is a variation of dessert gelatin. I have seen the gel used before on a couple TV shows such as Mithbusters in testing firearms. Cadavers have help save countless lives of police officers and soldiers with the testing of guns and body armor. It's doing experiments like these that test out theories, much like I'm sure we'll do in class, without bullets though.

  10. In chapter 6, the most surprising thing to me (besides the cadavers hanging up so people can shoot at them) was the fact that animals have similar organs to our organs and that a brown bear and emu have the same knee and hip as we do. A certain anatomy term I learned in this chapter is the effects that bullet and bullet force has to our organs. It could be applied by seeing a virtual organ and having a ball be thrown at it or something to that effect to see how the organ would look after words. I just feel that this chapter had the most importance because without these cadavers, many many police and military men would be dead right now.

    1. While I agree that the animal organs were interesting, I think I would still go with cadavers being hung up so people could shoot them being the coolest thing. I also agree with your point of us needing these tests to be done in order to save lives.

  11. This chapter taught me all the similar organs we have with animals, this is really great to know incase transplants are needed. The fact that we can also use animals as tests for firearms and the would reflect the same damage to organs as humans do. A biological concept that was mentioned in this chapter would be how the organs react to damage in different ways. I love how this chapter just elaborates on how cadavers actually protect our country in a way.

  12. I like this chapter because it gives the dead the opportunity to save the living. Cadavers are used to test bullets of many kinds and how we can try to stop someone without actually killing them. I find the psychological theory that deer will keep on going after ten seconds of their hearts being shot, while a normal human will immediately drop down quite fascinating. The cadavers are used to test bombs and see if our bullet proof vests work properly. Also i learned that gelatin if properly made could in fact serve as makeshift tissue to show how bullets open cavities in human tissue, but unlike human tissue does not shut back up a cavity but remains how it is. Nonlethal bullets are also tested, which are bullets made out of rubber and plastic, to incapacitate a civilian without harming them.

  13. In this chapter of stiff, cadavers are once again outside the lab for a field trip.Cadavers are use to test bullets and the also help improve bullet proof vest. The biological concept is how organs will react to the different bullets or damages. In many ways cadavers has help the country but its no also helping us in the aspect of law enforcement.Cadavers have save many lives by improving the bullet proof vest. Also nonlethal bullets were improved to catch a person without harming tham.

  14. Chapter 6 in "Stiff" was about the research of weapons. It was shocking to me when they tested guns on animals but then learned animals have similar organs as humans. That is actually very useful discovery for mankind in case of an emergency. In my opinion this chapter includes one of the most important uses for cadavers, bullet proof vests. Without them, a lot more casualties would take place in battle. Now we know how much power certain organs can take before dying out. Cadavers have helped save money and many lives in battle.

  15. This chapter of "Stiff" spoke to me just because military and corpses. This chapter goes into concept of the military using there weaponry on cadavers. This makes total sense in order to achieve maximum proficiency with there weaponry they use cadavers as test subjects. By testing on cadavers they can see what improvements to make in order to attack and defend all while by keeping themselves self.

  16. This chapter, to my surprise, covered the many uses for cadavers in the military. From determining safe standoff distances to the best footwear for minesweepers, these carcasses have allowed for the military not only to discover how much a soldier on defense can take, but also find the most efficient way to eliminate the offense. This is an interesting concept as it brings about two questions; what is the most a person can take before perishing, and what is the simplest way to kill them? This is undeniably the most flowery branch of the book.
